3 Typical Battery Backup Electrical Installations

The cost of your battery backup system (energy storage system – ESS) is dependent on 3 things:

  1. Battery Type: Cost is dependent on the type, capacity, brand, size and chemistry of your battery.
  2. ESS Mounting Location: Cost includes equipment installation, location at your property, building code costs, and permitting.
  3. Site Electrical Infrastructure: Cost is dependent on the existing electrical system setup, the location of electrical enclosures, possible rerouting of electrical panels and circuits, connections, wiring and electrical installation costs required to connect the battery backup and meet local building codes.

For an estimate of your true costs for installation take a look at the 3 electrical scenarios below.

This is meant to be a guide of project site characteristics which we typically encounter.

Energy Storage Solution – Easy Electrical Setup

Easy Electrical Install*

Estimated Extra Electrical Costs $1,000 – $3,500

In this example all storage and electrical connections are:

  • Readily available and within code and specs
  • Spatially near each other
  • In unobstructed areas
  • Free of other home and utility equipment
  • Not located in an attic or crawl space

They also:

  • May require replacing or upgrading the home’s Main Electrical Panel
  • Have adequate physical garage wall space for all ESS equipment
Energy Storage Solution – Easy Electrical Setup

Medium Electrical Install*

Estimated Extra Electrical Costs $3,500 – $5,500

In this example all storage and electrical connections are:

  • Readily available and within code and specs
  • Within 30-45 linear feet (covers going across the ceiling of a typical 2-car garage roof)

Hard Electrical Install*

Estimated Extra Electrical Costs $5,500+

In this example all storage and electrical connections are:

  • Electrical connections are spatially distanced with the main electrical panel located a long distance from the transfer switch, batteries and/or circuits protected by the batteries.
  • Requires extra conduit/routing paths, terminations and equipment (typically greater than 45 linear feet).
  • Routing conduit on the building exterior is possible and conduit path is generally free of obstructions
  • Homeowner prefers not seeing long conduit transversing the home or opts for an attic or crawl space installation.
  • In unobstructed areas
  • Free of other home and utility equipment
  • Not located in an attic or crawl space

They also:

  • Typically require replacing or upgrading the home’s Main Electrical Panel
  • Have adequate physical garage wall space for all ESS equipment
